Cheap sunglasses can provide plenty of protection
Protection against the sun's rays provided by cheap sunglasses is just as good as that provided by more expensive pairs, according to Health Which?.
Ultra violet (UV) rays from the sun can damage the eyes, and the effect can build up over time - which is why children as well as adults should wear sunglasses in strong sunlight.
Health Which? tested 12 pairs of sunglasses, ranging from unbranded children's sunglasses from £1 to a pair of Calvin Klein sunglasses at £89. All passed the relevant safety requirements of the British Standard BS EN 1836:1997 and so would give adequate UV protection.
All sunglasses should also carry the CE marking - though this is a European quality mark and it won't guarantee that the glasses will protect your eyes.
The darkness of the lenses isn't an indicator of the level of UV protection offered, and very dark tint glasses are unsuitable for driving.
