Consumer goods: Watches and Fake Designer Sunglasses at a Norfolk Flea Market
Paul J. McNulty, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of
Virginia, announced today that James Turner, age 45, of Chesapeake, Virginia, was sentenced by
Judge Jerome B. Friedman in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, to 64 months imprisonment,
3 years of supervised release, and restitution of $392,131.25, for his role in the thefts of
merchandise from interstate shipments at Norfolk Southern Railway’s trans-shipment point in
Chesapeake, Virginia, from the Summer of 2000 until May of 2001.
On April 10, 2002, a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment, charging him
with conspiring to steal $500,000.00 worth of electronics and other consumer goods from
imported cargo containers, trafficking in illegal cable converter boxes, selling the cable boxes, and
selling counterfeit watches and fake designer sunglasses at a Norfolk flea market. Turner entered a
guilty plea on July 3, 2002.
The case was in vestigated by the U.S. Customs Service and the Norfolk Southern Railroad
Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mike Smythers
and Assistant United St ates Attorney Joe DePadilla.
