UH Optometrist Says Sunglasses Important for Long-term Eye Health

As the summer heats up the University of Houston College of Optometry wants to remind you that your eyes are susceptible to sun damage, just like your skin. Sunglasses are the best way to protect against this damage.

Sunglasses are important. They provide protection from ultraviolet radiation, which can be harmful to one's eyes, says Gregory L. Stephens, associate professor of optometry. UV radiation contributes to disorders such as cataracts, macular degeneration, photokeratitis, pterygium and skin cancer around the eye.

Cataracts cloud the lens inside the eye and lead to vision impairment or blindness. Macular degeneration reduces vision due to an aging of the retina. UV radiation can speed the aging process. Photokeratitis is a sunburn of the cornea. Pterygium is a tissue growth on the white part of the eye.

In order to encourage the UH community to protect their eyes, the UHCO is offering a shining deal to members of the UH community. All members of the UH community are entitled to a 10 percent discount on materials from the University Optical Service (UOS). This discount covers sunglasses as well as regular glasses and contacts.
