Your Eyes are Constantly Susceptible to Damage by Ultraviolet Radiation

Despite factors such as weather conditions, age or how much time you spend outdoors, your eyes are constantly susceptible to damage by ultraviolet radiation.

Exposure to even small amounts of UV rays over the course of many years may contribute to cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye health problems.

Protecting your eyes from UV rays is more important now than it has ever been. A large amount of UV rays are penetrating the ozone layer and reaching the earth. Even wide-brimmed caps and hats can keep only about 50 percent of UV radiation from reaching the eyes.

The Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians recommends these guidelines to follow when purchasing quality, non-prescription sunglasses:

Don't be misled by UV labels or price. Some less expensive sunglasses may have better UV protection than those higher in price. Buy sunglasses where equipment is available to check the UV protection capabilities of the lenses. The protection level should be 99 to 100 percent from both UV-A and UV-B rays.

Try the sunglasses on in front of a mirror. If you can see your eyes easily through the lenses, they probably aren't dark enough. The lenses need to screen out 75 to 90 percent of light.

Gray, green and brown are good lens color choices because they do not modify color perception. Avoid medium and dark blue lenses, which may interfere with some individual's ability to distinguish the colors of traffic signals.

Check lenses to be sure the tint is not darker in one area than another.

To check for imperfections in the lens, hold the glasses at arm's length and look through them at a straight line in the distance, such as the edge of a door. Then slowly move the lens across the line. The lenses are imperfection if the straight edge distorts, sways, curves or moves.

Look for sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses, which are the most impact-resistant lenses available today.

Doctors of Optometry, who provide the greatest percentage of total eye care in Oklahoma, are primary healthcare providers who diagnose, manage and treat conditions, injuries and diseases of the human eye and visual system.
